As with every herb, microbiological contamination is quite frequent on cannabis and is carried on its leaves and flowers throughout the plant lifecycle. Given the multitude of variables on where and how cannabis is grown and processed, each method presents their own set of microbiological risks and protection factors both for the plant and especially with humans. Examples include pathogenic bacteria, fungal spores, bacterial spores and their associated toxin producing organisms.

The common methods used to sterilize or disinfect cannabis are not easily accessible and are cost prohibitive for the common public. These methods also have been shown to have quantitative losses of the active cannabinoid compound activity which is desired for therapeutic purposes.

The environment of indoor grow operations is prone to extreme levels of fungal contamination given the elevated temperatures, humidity and organic material within these environmental conditions. TDS (Total Dissolved Solids), Chlorine, Chloramine and Flouride are typically found in Municipal water sources. Water also transports unwanted pathogenic diseases such as Pythium which can jeopardize your harvest and contaminate your entire system.
